St. Maarten – Twenty eight employees of the tax administration participated in a training course last Friday to improve their knowledge about the island’s tax structure. The course was conducted by Vanessa Madema of the Stichting Belasting Accountants Bureau (Soab) from Curacao.
Madema focused on the different types of taxes and tax legislation such as the Algemene Landsverordening Landsbelastingen (General national ordinance national taxes).
Employees said that before the training course, which had been planned for some time, they were not familiar with many aspects of taxation.
“It’s not just learning that important. It’s learning what to do with what you learn and learning why you learn things that matters. Through learning and keeping up to date, you can do your job better and we all will benefit from that,” Inspectorate of Taxes head Geert Bergsma said.
All participants received certificates at the end of the training.
