St. Maarten minister De Weever: Government to regulate ‘back room’ abortions

THURSDAY, 26 SEPTEMBER 2013

PHILIPSBURG–Government is looking to regulate “back room” abortions, Health Minister Cornelius de Weever said when asked about the matter on Wednesday. “We have definitely looked into it,” the minister said adding that the Collective Prevention Services headed by Dr. Virginia Asin and the Inspectorate of Public Health have looked into this matter.

The minister said he has also had “numerous discussions” with some of the Obstetricians and Gynecologists (OBGYNs) about the matter. “We would like it regulated because we don’t want any back door [or – Ed.], back room procedures happening and then putting the young women at risk,” the minister said at the Council of Minister’s press briefing on Wednesday.

“Everyone knows that it is happening and we can’t put our head in the sand and pretend it’s not,” he said. The minister said regulating this issue is one solution. Another solution, he noted is prevention to avoid young women reaching a situation where they would want an abortion.
