St. Maarten Medical Center gets temporary internist

SATURDAY, 15 JUNE 2013, CAY HILL–St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) has bolstered its staff with the hiring of internist Gerrit Schreij. The specialist will be at SMMC from June 16 to September 15. Schreij worked as an internist in AcademischZiekenhuis Maastricht, Netherlands, for many years. His focus has been on intensive care, infectious diseases and hepatitis. His qualifications and experience in internal medicine are well-fitted to meet the needs of our patients, an SMMC representative said. Patients who wish to see the new internist are to make an appointment at the Outpatient Department by calling tel. 543-1111 ext. 1300. Appointments can be made Mondays to Fridays, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Social and Health Insurance SZV patients are further required to obtain a referral letter from their family doctor before visiting the internist. Dialysis patients have been treated by visiting nephrologists from Curaçao since internist Theo Jolles retired. This specialised service for these patients will continue. SMMC plans to acquire a full-time nephrologist in the future to service its dialysis patients, one of the largest patient groups of the hospital. SMMC representatives said the centre would continue to grow and maintain specialised services to meet the basic health care needs of the St. Maarten community and neighbouring islands.
